Scenes from the South: Memories of Childhood is a reflection on my memories of my grandparents’ house in rural Georgia. As a child, my family and I would travel down to Georgia twice a year to visit my dad’s parents and his extended family. The serene, pastoral atmosphere around their home always allowed my imagination to run wild while I could simultaneously escape from the suburban South Jersey setting where I spent most of my time. However, as my dad’s family grows old and my own life becomes busier, I realize I may not have many trips left to that special place. This piece recalls childhood nostalgia with the distance of maturity and the knowledge that all things, no matter how special, must eventually fade away.
