The World Inside is an homage to my past self and my journey thus far as a composer. I began writing short piano pieces for myself at the age of seven, and I was fortunate to premiere one of these early pieces in recital at that young age. Ever since then, composition has always been a large part of my life, and I dreamed of using the ideas I’ve developed throughout my studies in one culminating piece, as a reflection of my growth and as gratitude to all who have helped guide me to pursue what I love.
Starting with a tender piano solo—the theme from my first premiere—this piece develops organically into an imagined world of childlike wonder: one that uses the near-unlimited potential of the orchestra to evoke a large soundscape with many interlocking parts, intricate and satisfying. The piece progresses through various sound worlds and permutations, aided by my own accumulation of knowledge through my formal studies in composition, but all unified by my original childlike vision.
